Ontario is Canada’s main economic hub and one of the most diverse places in the world in which to live. Niagara Falls, Toronto and Ottawa are some of the most desirable tourist destinations in the province and lighting plays an important role. Lighting design is an artform that draws a mystical connection between a space or place and the occupants. The way a space is lit subconsciously influences how it’s perceived. Lighting that is comfortable and harmonized with the architecture, interior finishes or landscape elements contributes to the overall aesthetic in a manner that is pleasant and memorable.
At OALD, we understand how to utilize light to draw focus, support wayfinding, and define the atmosphere. We help our clients determine the right type of light to use whether it be static white, tunable white or colour changing. We also select the most appropriate optics and luminaire arrangement to achieve a desired effect.
Our Role
The main consultant roles in building construction include Design, Engineering and Construction. Interior Designers and Architects are great at developing the vision and selecting products that support the aesthetic qualities of a space, structure, or landscape. They do, however, tend to seek assistance in implementing the technical aspects of the lighting system such as optics and controls.
Engineers are great at problem solving and providing code compliant solutions. They understand the technical aspects of design and naturally gravitate toward solutions that are simple, efficient, and economical. Engineers are extremely busy as they’re responsible for all the electrical systems such as power distribution, fire alarm, security, audio-visual, communications, nurse call, etc. leaving little time to keep up with design trends and new technology.
Architectural Lighting Designers (LDs) are independent consultants dedicated to managing the aesthetics, efficiency, code compliance and economics of lighting systems design. Like any other profession, we each have our unique strengths; Some LDs are more artistic while others are more technical.
At OALD, we have an appreciation for both the art and science of illumination, and we have the experience necessary to assist the electrical engineer with the entire lighting system. All they need to do is tell us where to place exit signs, where to locate control equipment and which distribution panels to use for power. In addition, we negotiate pricing with bidders, review shop drawings, respond to contractor inquiries and review the installation & commissioning on site so that the job runs smoothly from start to finish. As independent consultants we’re able to offer our services free of product obligations. Having OALD on your team benefits everyone from Owner to Builder to Occupant.
